“The song allows you to picture every single thing that is happening, putting you in the singer’s shoes,” writes VOX ATL’s Brooklyn Mahari. “But, the lyrics take a turn as she sings about the person her partner was previously with.”

Review: Olivia Rodrigo’s Latest “Deja Vu” Takes Us on a Relationship Rollercoaster

Up and coming artist Olivia Rodrigo has just released her second single “Deja Vu” and it was something I heavily anticipated. For those that don’t know, Rodrigo’s debut single “Drivers License” now has over 565 million (yes, million) streams on Spotify and counting, leaving listeners on the edge of their seats, waiting for the singer’s next song to be released.

On April 1, 2021, the performer dropped her second single entitled “Deja Vu.”

Once you hit play, listeners are greeted with sounds of chiming, followed by Rodrigo’s voice and lyrics starting with, “Car rides to Malibu/strawberry ice cream/one spoon for two/and trading jackets/Laughing ‘bout how small it looks on you,”  followed by sweet melodic harmonies.  The lyrics continue on a positive wave as Olivia recalls the happy memories of being with someone as she sings “Watching reruns of ‘Glee’/being annoying/singing in harmony.”

This song allows you to picture every single thing that is happening, putting you in the singer’s shoes. But, the lyrics take a turn as she sings about the person her partner was previously with. Rodrigo becomes reminiscent of the activities she’s been through, wondering if her former partner was having as much with their new significant other as the two of them once did.

Rodrigo sings, “So when you gonna tell her/that we did that too?/She thinks it’s special/but it’s all reused/That was our place/I found it first/I made the jokes/you tell to her/when she’s with you/Do you get deja vu when she’s with you?”

Despite the semi-somber lyrics, the melody and overall vibe of the track make you think of the positive notes which is what makes this single so enjoyable.

Rodrigo delivers a sweet, sentimental, pop ballad that will have everyone hitting replay.
