VOX 5: Nostalgic Styles Cropping Up This Year

What do you think of when you hear the word nostalgia? Bright colors? Playgrounds and toys? The 80’s? Nostalgic feelings for days gone by have only been increasing as we move through an uncertain future, and the fashion trends of our generation are no exception. 

From tramp stamps and low rise jeans, to boldly colored windbreakers, the fashion of the people has been revisiting the colorful trends of the 80’s, 90’s, and even early 2000’s.


Y2K

Y2k, or “early 00’s” fashion refers exclusively to the styles of teen television and Disney stars on the red carpet. Some staples of this style coming back are:

  • Baguette bags
  • Baby shirts
  • Pleated plaid skirts
  • Tramp stamps
  • Jewelry

When I say 80’s I mean the bombastic windbreakers and peppy workout videos many people’s minds jump to. Aspects of this style returning include:

  • Mullets and blown out hair
  • Mom jeans
  • Neon colors
  • Windbreakers
  • Arcade patterns

Kidcore describes a style based in nostalgia for childhood, specifically kindergarten and early elementary era. This style may include articles of the 80’s and 90’s, but is meant to invoke a more modern past. Kidcore fashion usually includes:

  • Primary colors
  • Sneakers
  • Color blocks
  • Jeans
  • Overalls

70’s

The 70’s may not be what you think of when you think of today’s trends, but they are returning in ways you see every day. 70’s styles returning today include:

  • Bell bottoms
  • Suede
  • Tie dye
  • “Groovy” patterns

This can be seen coming back in small ways, such as swirling patterns and mesmerizing colors working their way onto tops and jeans.
