For the last three years, I always make sure the calendar on my phone has Teen Night marked as a priority. This year, Teen Night will be take place on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the High Museum of Art with a theme of Retroactive.

What is Teen Night?

Teen Night is an opportunity for people ages 13 through 19 to surround themselves with Atlanta’s most vibrant teenagers, watch live music, attend art workshops, visit the selfie station/photo booth and get a tour of the artwork displayed at the High Museum of Art. Teen Night is planned by a group of 16 teenagers who make up the High’s Teen Team and have worked throughout the summer to plan the pop-up shop, activities for the night and performers.

What will happen at Teen Night?

For the last few weeks, I have been able to sit in with the Teen Team as they planned this year’s Teen Night. Sarah Kallis, 16, a member of the Teen Team’s decoration committee and student at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal, said the biggest item they are working on is their pop-up shop.

“We are going to be selling screen-printed shirts, choker necklaces, screen-printed tote bags, temporary tattoos, and one-of-a kind buttons,” said Sarah. “We will also have some art workshops that are centered around the current exhibition at the High Museum of Art, which would be the shoes! The workshops are going to have some do-it-yourself shoelaces and patches.”

The items that will be sold in the pop-up shop include garlands, chokers, one-of-a-kind buttons, tote bags, T-shirts and other creative items. The price range is $1 to $20. The proceeds will be put toward the budget for the next Teen Night, which will occur in the spring.

What about tours?

Along with working hard on setting up their pop up shop, the Teen Team has organized their own tours that will be available the entire night. Their tours highlight and feature some of the most prominent artworks in the galleries and showcase the Teen Team’s most favored pieces. When teenagers arrive to Teen Night, they will be able to have a tour lead by another teenager.

How to get to this event?

The High Museum of Art is located across the street from MARTA’s Arts Center train station. This area also features a variety of eateries in walking distance, such as Colony Square Food Court, DaVinci’s Pizza and Atlantic Station. For more information about public transportation, check out MARTA’s shuttle guide.

If none of these activities reel you in, just know that according to Sarah: “There will also be food there, and that is always a perk.”
