Poetry Finalist: “Battleground”

by share

It has arisen, my dears, my children;
The war of a millennium years
Blood of all are spilled throughout
Filling the bare ground with a red rage

A thunderous roar deafened the warriors
Who had prepared for battle for years
But even they were not willing
To face the horrors that were coming

Hands shake, and loyalties waver
Deceit is harsh and inevitable
And cold eyes and excellent memory
Are enough to turn the most righteous men evil

Look. Look closely, and you will see.
Notice the subtle signs.
But younglings, watch out, beware–
Your closest friends are not who they say they are.
