In recent years, Atlanta has emerged as a central hub for film and television. With its mix of city streets, natural landscapes, and high-tech studios, Atlanta has helped bring some legendary films to life, many of which have been nominated for or won Oscars. Here are five incredible movies that prove ATL, and the whole state of Georgia for that matter, is the new Hollywood.
Black Panther (2018) – 3 Oscar Wins, 7 Nominations
Marvel’s “Black Panther” was a total game-changer, and a lot of it was filmed in Atlanta. Pinewood Atlanta Studios handled most of the production, and the High Museum of Art even doubled as the British Museum in that intense vibranium heist scene. The movie won three Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.
What makes Black Panther special isn’t just the action — it’s the cultural impact. It was the first superhero movie to get a Best Picture nomination, and it introduced the world to a magical and futuristic idea of Wakanda that felt simultaneously mythical and real. Additionally, with a strong cast and powerful themes of identity and heritage, it’s a movie that has made a lasting impact beyond the big screen.
Avengers: Endgame (2019) – 1 Oscar Nomination
As one of the biggest movies ever, “Avengers: Endgame” had several scenes shot in and around Atlanta. The crazy final battle shots were also filmed at Pinewood Atlanta Studios. Some of the city’s urban spots, like The Gulch, were also used for key scenes. The movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects.
After over 10 years of Marvel movies, “Endgame” wrapped up numerous storylines with intense action, heartbreaking moments, and unforgettable scenes.
Ford v Ferrari (2019) – 2 Oscar Wins, 4 Nominations
A movie about cars might not seem exciting, but “Ford v Ferrari” proves otherwise. Though it’s about the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, where Ford and Ferrari tried to cover the most distance with their cars in 24 hours in France, a lot of the racing scenes were shot at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The film won two Oscars for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing.
The relationship between the two main characters, played by Christian Bale and Matt Damon, is a standout feature of the movie. It’s not just about fast cars — it’s about passion, rivalry, and pushing limits. If you’re into high-speed chases, drama, and a bit of history, this one’s a must-watch.
Forrest Gump (1994) – 6 Oscar Wins, 13 Nominations
Even though “Forrest Gump” is set all over the United States and even a little beyond, parts of it were filmed in Georgia. The famous “life is like a box of chocolates” scene was shot in Chippewa Square in Savannah, and some of the Vietnam War scenes were filmed on an island off the coast of Georgia. The movie won six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor — Tom Hanks.
This movie is special as one of the most hilarious movies of the 90s. It takes you through decades of history, all told through the eyes of a simple, kindhearted guy who somehow ends up in the middle of everything. It’s funny, emotional, and has some of the most quotable lines ever.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) – 1 Oscar Nomination
Dystopian sci-fi meets Atlanta in “Catching Fire,” the second (and arguably best) “Hunger Games” movie. The Tribute Training Center scenes were filmed inside the Marriott Marquis, and the Swan House at the Atlanta History Center was used as President Snow’s mansion. Even the forests around Atlanta were transformed into a deadly arena. The film got an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.
“Catching Fire” amplifies everything from the first movie. The stakes are higher, the characters are more complex, and the audience is already invested in Katniss. It’s not just about survival anymore — it’s about rebellion.
