Georgia Teen Institute: The Power of Teen Voices

by share

This month VOX went a little ways outside of our normal territory in Atlanta and travelled to Oxford College of Emory University in the small rural town of Covington, Georgia. VOX Media Cafe Interns Arlena, Catherine and I facilitated two separate workshops in the same day for teens attending Georgia Teen Institute (GTI). The GTI teens were able to select which workshops they wanted to participate in; the first we offered was entitled “Raise Your Voice in Your Community,” and the second, “My Vision (Vision Boards & Poetry).”

We are proud to share some of their voices.

Teens everywhere have opinions and voices. Often times they are overlooked and tossed away because of their age. In cases where teens are allowed to express themselves amazing things are created. When teens themselves come together to solve a problem, new and different solution are thought of. In addition teens have a new and different perspective on the issue.

Through Georgia 4-H, I have had the extravagant opportunity to share my story with others to inspire the younger generation to accomplish their goals and aspirations. I serve on many leadership positions on county, state, regional and national levels, and I am a proud, true leader, developed through 4-H. Thank you for allowing me to share my story through Georgia Teen Institute.

Amelia is also the president of the Bartow County Youth Action Team and GA YouthMPowers state director.

We enjoyed our time at Georgia Teen Institute 2016, talking about the power of teen voices! We’ll be publishing more teen voices from GTI this summer!
