In 1993, 13 Atlanta-area teens and 10 adult volunt In 1993, 13 Atlanta-area teens and 10 adult volunteers created VOX, a teen-driven newspaper to serve as an uncensored voice for teens. Since then, VOX has provided free, teen-driven afterschool programs with a focus on self-expression and leadership development. In 2015, VOX redesigned our program model, deepening our focus on digital publishing and teen engagement to increase our impact and heighten our visibility as the voice of Atlanta teens. Today, our teen staff creates digital content delivered to teens through social media and digital marketing. Be part of the next 30 years and donate to celebrate VOX Turning 30!

September of 1993 VOX took on Atlanta Journal-Cons September of 1993 VOX took on Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Lewis Grizzard.

By this time, Lewis Grizzard was the city’s superstar columnist, who had appeared on “The Tonight Show” and had written dozens of bestselling books. But after Grizzard criticized young people by writing, “Anybody who thinks spray paint humor is a riot ought to be in bed nursing their zits by that time anyway," VOX teens responded without a doubt.

In an editorial addressed to Grizzard, VOX teens wrote that his depiction of teens was “not only insensitive but an inaccurate picture of teenagers. We take offense at your comment and would rather not such stereotypes be reinforced in the minds of adults reading your column…We are kept awake at night tending to hard news stories, not zits.”

Standing up for themselves, VOX ATL teens displayed the very mission of the organization. To amplify teen voices.
