Dear Hidden Girl EP.4: “Happy Indigenous Peoples Month”

Dear hidden girl…

To the girls that see their culture worn as costume for holiday, to the girls that have seen “Native Princess” up for display on the shelves for Halloween, to the girls that are told they aren’t enough because they don’t fit into someone else’s narrative of how they should be.

To the girls that have their identities stripped and simplified, to the girls that are seen as some type of exotica, to the girls that see people convince themselves they are Indigenous by a one percent ancestry test result, to the girls that see the media portray Indigenous Peoples with white faces, to the girls that have seen Indigenous peoples month be invalidated and overlooked, shadowed by Black Friday. To the girls who are Indigenous.

I see you..I can hear you,  you are loud.

You are not invisible. You are not invalid.

Your experiences are real and worthy of support and recognition. You are vivid and your voice and story has incredible power. You are outstanding. Don’t allow anyone to tell you different…not even yourself.

Don’t let this dislocate your pride, don’t let this  break your stride, don’t let this tear you down. You are resilient. The experiences of you and your people have the birthright to be acknowledged and listened to.

You have the right to be celebrated to feel pride in your identity, no matter how much or little you know about your identity, You are multidimensional. You don’t need to fit into anyones narrative. You are enough just as you are. You are beautiful just as you are.

It’s not your life’s duty to try to educate those who have a refusal to learn.

Your life matters, every little thing about you matters. You are not invisible, we are not invisible, far from it. Keep going.

Share your strength. Seize your potential.

And Happy Indigenous Peoples Month.

Oh and P.S. Remember to take care of yourself to the best of your ability and never discredit how far you’ve come.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Month, we will not be silenced.

Dear Hidden Girl EP. 3: “Body” [VIDEO]

Dear Hidden Girl…

Did you know you have a body? We all do. No matter what it looks like, how it functions or how
we may view it, we all have one. Did you know your body tries it’s absolute hardest to carry you
in this world?

Hidden girl do you know what body autonomy is? It’s your right to your body, to govern your
body, just like your voice.

You have the right to explore your body, to learn and examine your body, to know your body.

Your body deserves to be taken care of, you deserve it.

Your body has value and worth and that does not change because you or someone else can’t
seem to find it that way.

Your body has the right to be respected and treated with care and kindness no matter how it
looks or functions.

You deserve to let go of beauty standards, let your body be free of that harm.
Beauty isn’t one dimensional, neither are humans.

You have the right to be at terms with your body, to like your body…even to love your body. I
know that for some of us that can seem unattainable, but it’s not. We can take it one step at a
time.

So let’s take a step, breathe with me, I want you to say this to your body right now..

“I am grateful for you, thank you for all your hard work”

Good job! You took a step, I’m proud of you.

Oh and p.s. treat yourself with kindness and remember you are human also go drink some
water.

“Dear Hidden Girl” EP. 2: Voice [VIDEO]

Dear hidden girl…

Your voice matters. You’re beautiful. And you know something? People want to hear your
voice. they really want to hear it! Even if we haven’t met those people yet.

The people that smothered and silenced your voice should have realized how amazing it is.
you’re safe to use your voice here.

I want you to make me think, to make me wonder, to make me view things in a way I never
have before. I want to know what goes on in your mind and I want you to know your voice is
important and necessary and you are so capable of doing that.

Your voice is meaningful. Your voice belongs to you and you only. It’s yours. Your voice shares,
it has purpose. Your voice deserves to be respected, your voice deserves to be heard.
Your voice deserves to roar.

Own your voice. Your thoughts, your emotions, your experiences matter, just as much as theirs.
Don’t let your voice be smothered and stomped out. Don’t let them silence you. Own your voice,
because you owning your voice is stronger than all of their efforts to silence you.

Share your voice even if that means you can only share it with yourself.

Own your voice, value your voice and story, hear your voice, So that no one will truly have the
power to silence you. And when the people who will value your voice come, they can hear you.
So, hidden girl ROAR! even if you can only roar in your own mind, do it anyway!

if using your voice out loud jeopardizes your safety, I want you to remember that your voice
matters and deserves to be heard. there is no shame in needing to be heard.
Your voice matters. You own your voice no one else does, and remember to stay safe.

And P.S.
You’re a magnificent person

Dear Hidden Girl EP. 1

“Dear Hidden Girl” EP. 1 [VIDEO]

“Dear Hidden Girl” is a video series dedicated to anyone who identifies as a teen girl, a collection of “letters” that we will be opening together consisting of spoken word, poetry, visual arts and whatever else may come our way.

“Hidden Girl” is both me and you, who are both on their own paths of self discovery, finding ourselves and understanding the world around us. She represents our truest self.

In this series my goal is to empower and acknowledge all teen girls, and share reflections of myself and my experiences in the world. As the series progresses I hope to learn more about myself and you as well. Understanding that we are alike and different. Sharing our complexity and simplicity.

With that said I hope you are willing to join me to discovering and acknowledging the beautifully complex layered person that is “hidden girl.”
