Running

by share

I imagine us running, no friend or foe

No one knows who I speak of but they don’t need to know

It is not my mom nor my dad or aunts

Neither my grandma or my acquaintances: a bunch

It was not a love interest nor someone I’d call “bae”

And to be more clear, we did run, not lay…

We did not sit on the couch or play house as we do

You’re only 3, how can I tell you the truth?

You cannot comprehend that you are my happy place…

In a field full of grass, with shoes closed with lace.

There was a dog running with us, a man’s best friend

Excited for the future we have to spend…

So I guess what I’m saying is I’m so happy you are here

Because before, no family came close, nor near

You stopped me in my tracks, like headlights to a deer

Each day, I appreciate your growing years

How have you become my everything … I’m not sure

But I do know that you are the water I won’t pour

No need to water the plants of a world that’s so crossed

I have no way to go now, so together we’re lost.
