I Pledge to Black Girl Liberation [POETRY]

|

I pledge to Black girl liberation.

I ask who I am when the world keeps trying to define me first — by my name,

by my Blackness,

before I even get the chance to define myself.

I am more than a color,

more than a name

more than a box on the first form I shall fill.

They see my race before my face,

my skin before my story,

my struggle before my glory.

They do not know the history I carry

or the women whose shoulders I stand on.

So I pledge allegiance to my beautiful Black sisters —

the ones I find community in,

the ones who remind me I never have to shrink to fit in.

The ones who laugh with me

cry with me,

and stand beside me when the world tries to divide me.

I pledge to our softness,

our culture,

our power,

our joy.

To every Black girl still learning her worth in a world that makes her question it.

Liberation isn’t just breaking a chain —

it’s knowing my history and still choosing my name.

It’s knowing I am worthy without needing permission.

So I pledge to our voices, our stories, our freedom, our vision.

And if the world asks,

“Who are you?”

I’ll answer: I am Black.

I am beautiful. I am history. I am culture.

I am every Black girl who came before me

and every Black girl still becoming after me

And I will not apologize for taking up space in a world never built to make room for my face.
