VOX Teen Poetry: “New Shoes”

by share

Our relationship is like new shoes
Clean, a little tight, and we avoid messes
See, that wouldn’t be a problem but
It’s been three years and walking still
Hasn’t come easy
I still scrunch my toes to make room for you
I’ve been wearing these shoes since before my freshman year in high school
I’ll graduate in two years, but can i even make it across the stage?
You been wearing these shoes since your freshman year of high school
You will graduate next year
But when you shake your principal’s hand instead of “thank you”
Will you say “this is painful?”
Our relationship is like new shoes
So clean they might as well be wrapped in plastic — but that’s so suffocating!
Yeah, I know, but we look good!
