Mass Incarceration in America — A VOX Media Cafe Multimedia Story

by share

Our group was challenged to tackle the controversial topic of mass incarceration, but specifically, the racial inequality in the prison system. We decided to tackle the racial disparities within the criminal justice system by conducting several different interviews. We conducted interviews that gave us a professional, personal and general point of view.

We were able to incorporate those interviews in our video package. Not only did we learn about the issues within the criminal justice system, but we also talked about possible solutions. Some of the possible solutions to this injustice include raising awareness of the issue and additional rehabilitation opportunities.

This multimedia project also included a photo gallery and statistics, reported from the NAACP Criminal Justice Fact sheet. Here are the statistics we found most compelling:

  • The U.S. is 5 percent of the world population and has 25 percent of world prisoners.
  • One in six black men had been incarcerated as of 2001. If current trends continue, one in three black males born today can expect to spend time in prison during his lifetime.
  • Five times as many whites people are using drugs as African Americans, yet African Americans are sent to prison for drug offenses at 10 times the rate of whites (NAACP).
  • Thirty-five percent of black children grades 7-12 have been suspended or expelled at some point in their school careers compared to 20 percent of Hispanic students and 15 percent of white students.
