WonderRoot’s ‘Off The Wall’ Community Conversations, Artistic Murals Explore Civil Rights and Social Justice

by share

VOX ATL attended the launch of “Off the Wall,” WonderRoot’s citywide project in partnership with the Super Bowl Host Committee. The June 28 press conference introduced the program, which takes place this summer through February 2019, when the city hosts Super Bowl 53.

Part of the bigger picture of “Off the Wall” is to allow the world to not only see Atlanta as a sports city but also as a culturally artistic city, according to leaders who spoke at the program launch. Organizations like VOX will host community conversations that tackle issues like civil rights and social commentary happening in the greater Atlanta area, and artists will then create murals that reflect those conversations — to be produced in time for the Super Bowl in Atlanta.

Through this project, WonderRoot is reaching out to community leaders and bringing residents together to produce art that sparks a conversation. This video shares what some of those leaders said to get the conversations started.

India, 16, attended the press conference with Erin Davis (not pictured) both VOX teen staffers. Here she interviews WonderRoot’s Executive Director and Co-founder Chris Appleton.
