The Importance of Costuming in ‘The Lion King’

by share

When we meet someone for the first time, we often find ourselves drawn to the most noticeable aspects of their appearance. As humans, we are naturally impressionable and tend to focus on what stands out to us the most. Personal stylists focus on showcasing who one is through their clothing, and how they want to be perceived.  The same is true in live theater, where every small detail of a character’s costuming holds significance.

Costuming can tell a story on its own. Costume designers study diligently for years to get familiar with their practice. The amount of detail, talent, and precision that goes into every aspect is wildly impressive. One of the world-renowned musicals, “The Lion King,” is known for its amazing costumes. Julie Taymor, the designer for the stage play, has won many awards for costume, puppet, and mask designs. as well as for her talent for directing. She also won a Tony Award for directing “The Lion King” in 1998.

There are over 25 different animals depicted in “The Lion King,” with at least 50 personalized custom and handmade costumes for the actors. The costumes for the main characters such as Simba and Mufasa share equal importance with the costumes for the zebras. The designers treated everything as an opportunity to be culturally accurate and as an opportunity to share more information about the characters’ personalities and roles within Pride Rock.

I recently went to see “The Lion King” at the Fox Theatre and was deeply immersed in the story. The audience’s attention was caught like a fish on a hook. As I looked around I saw everyone’s eyes as wide as a watermelon.  The adults were shocked, but it was evident that the children truly believed they were living in a fairy tale.  The first awakening for me was the gigantic elephant walking down the theater aisle. The creation was followed by other wildlife, all hyper-realistic, and played by humans.

The animals are brought to life through stilts, strings, electric, mechanical headpieces, and puppetry. The actors are given tons of time to practice their personified animal-like movements. Their job doesn’t stop when they aren’t in a performance, they practice for months and have to fully embrace their animal.  Multiple performers are required to portray some of the animals – including the elephant, which is played by four actors, and the five gazelles, which are played by 15 performers, in total.

The level of coordination and teamwork required to bring these characters to life is truly remarkable. It’s not just about the individual performances but also about how the actors work together to create a seamless and believable portrayal of the animal kingdom. The attention to detail in the costumes, puppetry, and the dedication of the actors to their roles truly shines through in every scene.

Everyone that night was lucky to witness the culmination of countless hours of hard work and preparation coming together to create such a captivating experience for the audience. The details in the costumes are truly breathtaking, from the intricate patterns and textures to the way they move and flow with the actors’ movements. Each costume is a work of art in itself, and it’s clear that every element has been carefully considered to bring out the essence of the character it represents. The actors’ dedication to their roles is evident in every aspect of their performance. Not only do they have to embody the physicality and mannerisms of the animals they portray, but they also have to convey the emotions and complexities of the characters. The entire cast did a great job at showing the depth and animal lifestyle of their characters. The movements of the puppets and costumes matched up seamlessly with their body and facial expressions which made everything feel sure.

From the gasps of amazement to the thunderous applause, it’s clear that the production has left a lasting impression on everyone in the theatre. The sheer talent and commitment of the cast and crew shine through in every moment, captivating the audience and transporting them to the heart of the African savanna.

The dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the production, from the costume designers to the performers, truly paid off in creating an unforgettable and magical experience for all who have the privilege of witnessing it. It was truly a beautiful experience, and it was a personal reminder of how visual storytelling can transport people into new worlds and develop many new perspectives. The aspects of a team, hard work, and talent made “The Lion King” at the Fox Theatre an incredible experience. If I ever get the chance to see the live theater show again I would be sure to take that opportunity.
