Having safe places for teens to hang out in a big city like Atlanta is important. Certain areas can feel sketchy or just not meant for us, and it makes a difference when we know there are spots where we can feel safe.
Here are some spots around metro Atlanta that I and other local teens recommend!
Decatur Square
Decatur Square is a great spot for teens to hang out and explore. It’s filled with small local businesses, perfect for supporting the community. You can check out places like the bookstore Little Shop of Stories, or grab some ice cream at Butter & Cream.
The whole area is walkable, offering a nice break from the busyness of downtown. Since it’s near a few schools, you’ll usually find other teens around, especially after school hours. The MARTA station is right in the middle of the square. Plus, there are often events happening, like the Decatur Book Festival or Screen on the Square, where they play a movie on the lawn.
The High Museum
The High Museum of Art has been a part of Atlanta since 1926, and it’s become a welcoming space for teens over the years. They host teen art afternoons and nights throughout the month, which are free, and you can connect with other creatives. There are also family Saturdays if you’re looking for a weekend activity. The museum is also free to visit on the second Sunday of every month.
They also have a yearly teen team made up of 15 teenagers. This is a paid position that includes a six-week summer program. Applications open at the beginning of every year, and you can stay updated by checking the High Museum Teen Instagram account and their website.
The Works
The Works is a food hall and more, located in the upper westside of Atlanta, and has 32 different restaurants. Summer is the best time to visit since there are lots of outdoor spaces to enjoy your food and take pictures of the art in the area.
There’s also a playground if you’re bringing younger family members, and it’s pet-friendly! They sometimes have live music, which is a great chance to support local musicians.
Local Libraries
Local libraries are probably not a place you would usually think of as a hang-out spot. But many libraries have events you can register for online, like book clubs, author talks, arts and crafts sessions, and more!
Some even host dedicated teen hangout hours, giving you a place to meet new people or to chill with friends. For example, Fulton County libraries offer monthly photography and manga clubs. Check your county library’s website for upcoming events and opportunities.
Museum of Illusions
The Museum of Illusions in Atlantic Station is a cool spot if you’re looking to do something different. Full of mind-bending exhibits with crazy optical illusions and interactive rooms, it’s the perfect place to take some wild photos for your Instagram.
Tickets are $29 per person, and you can grab food or shop after you’re done. The only drawback for teenagers is that Atlantic Station requires them to have a parent or guardian after 3 p.m. On top of that, there are strict rules about clothing, such as no visible undergarments or gang-related attire, and behavior, including bans on shouting, loitering, and using hoverboards or skateboards. While these rules aim to create a welcoming environment, they might feel a bit limiting for younger visitors hoping for a more relaxed outing.
Ponce City Market
Personally, I love Ponce City Market! They have a fun rooftop where you can play games and mini-golf, and there are tons of food and shopping options around. It’s open late, making it perfect for weekends.
Just keep in mind that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to go on the roof. I highly recommend going in the evening when the sun is setting because the skyline looks amazing! Tickets are $15 for anyone 13 and older, or you can grab a $30 all-access pass for admission to mini-golf, boardwalk games, and seasonal ice skating!
